Raising Awareness

65% of line mangers in medium and large businesses say they would like mental health awareness training
Mental Health - Still the Last Workplace Taboo? (Shaw Trust/Trajectory 2010)

Increasing mental health awareness among your employees enhances the delivery of your business and the service you provide. Line managers often feel unsure about how to support colleagues who experience depression, anxiety and other mental health problems and staff at the frontline of your business may not know how best to deal with customers who have such difficulties. Increasing awareness of mental health among your managers and staff will improve the service you provide, retain valued customers and attract new ones, and demonstrate that you, as an employer, support your staff in this area of concern.

We offer a range of workshops and courses at Workways and they can also be delivered at your premises. Dates are available throughout 2012 - Download details and booking form

Being Mindful      10 Feb   19 Sept
BEING MINDFUL provides an introduction to mental health conditions, the impact on the workplace, dealing with distress, supporting presence of staff and managing absence. Being Mindful focuses on practice not policies and works best with participants from a mixture of roles and disciplines – for example, line managers and frontline staff, especially those with little or no knowledge of mental health issues. Directors, HR, Occupational Health, Union and other staff representatives may also find it helpful.

Mental Health First Aid       29 Feb & 1 Mar    19 & 20 June
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help given to someone experiencing a mental health problem before professional help is obtained. The aims are:

  • to preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others
  • to provide help to prevent the mental health problems developing into a more serious state
  • to promote the recovery of good mental health
  • to provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem

Mental Health First Aid does not teach people to be therapists. However, it does teach people how to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and how to guide a person towards appropriate professional help. The course is delivered by trained instructors on the staff of Workways, the Devon Partnership NHS Trust service which runs MINDFUL EMPLOYER.  Download details and booking form

Details of other providers are available on the MHFA England website.

Keeping Well at Work        14 May     7 Dec
This session introduces a practical tool, based on the internationally acknowledged Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP). Using WRAP benefits staff, Line Managers, Occupational Health Advisors and Human Resources alike.  The session will cover how WRAP can help people maintain their wellbeing, identify if that level of wellbeing drops, what can be done to help, who can be contacted and recording this in a personal workbook.  Download details and booking form

Workways also runs workshops for employment advisors, healthcare professionals and others involved in supporting people in Job Retention (helping people stay in work) and about benefits and tax credits. Download details and booking form
