Sharing Good Practice

Employing 68 people, University of Portsmouth Students' Union have been a Charter signatory for 5 years and also access MINDFUL EMPLOYER Plus for their staff. At Induction all new staff are given a hard copy of Keeping Well At Work and new line managers are given the MINDFUL EMPLOYER Line Manager Resource. UPSU also have an annual ‘It’s OK not to be OK’ event and other provision aimed at supporting staff wellbeing. The Union’s ‘Mindful Buddies’ scheme provides formal groups who support each other’s wellbeing. ‘Buddies are just there to look out for each other, ensure that we are looking out for ourselves and not forgetting to do the things that reduce stress, increase our health and happiness & make our work world ease a little,’ says Lucy Simpson of UPSU. ‘Buddies are not replacements for line managers or a place to share work related concerns (we have processes in place for that) but they are there to remind us about what we need to do to stay well at work. So for example you wouldn’t discuss issues themselves but you might tell your buddy that you have a few concerns going on and your buddy would remind you that the mindful thing to do would be to share those concerns with their manager or someone that can help find solutions.’
