Coachwise Limited

At Coachwise Limited, a Leeds-based SME which helps organisations implement their sports development programmes, a member of staff was experiencing severe depression, brought on by a number of family issues. He advised that he was unable to work and had been struggling for some time, but had not wanted to admit it to anyone. He had a number of conversations with two members of the Personnel team, who urged him to go to see his GP and get professional help. They also reminded him of the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) and suggested that he call immediately. He phoned the helpline and they also encouraged him to get professional help, which he did.

He was signed off work for a period of time, during which he got professional help and he eventually returned with a phased workload.  Regular contact was made by Personnel during this time and they also encouraged him to inform his line manager, so that he would receive further support. He did this and on his return, his work was managed carefully to ensure that he was not under too much pressure. He is now back at work full time and is taking positive steps to retain his good mental health, such as attending courses held recently on Wellbeing and Mindfulness.

As that example shows, it’s so important to keep talking with someone – why not download a copy of Making Work Work to support those conversations?
